Some sixty years ago, the original Penn Station was demolished in a short-sighted plan that is now considered a civic disaster. Today, ReThinkNYC is dedicated to preventing another such mishigas. Responding to the clamor to do something, the cadre of the business-as-usual permanent government—including the transportation-industrial complex—got to work. As could be expected, a plan emerged that squanders billions but expends little imagination and would create a soul-crushing, fifties-style, dated transportation plan and “urban removal” style of development. Our hope is that newly-appointed Penn Station lead Andy Byford of Amtrak can change this trajectory.
At ReThinkNYC, we have spent countless hours studying the issues surrounding Penn Station. Our plan is different. We refuse to destroy a neighborhood. Our solution includes through-running, essential for efficient train travel in the modern era. Through-running is the international gold standard in commuter rail and a proven economic growth juggernaut. Such growth typically includes a material uptick in desperately needed housing starts.
We want to rectify the misguided mistake of the past and construct a transformative and worthy Penn Station. This new station should be informed, to the extent practicable, by the classic original Charles McKim Penn Station, but updated for 21st-century technology and travel needs.
I invite you to join us in supporting our vision.
Sam Turvey, Chairperson, ReThinkNYC
